SHOOTING THE AURORA BOREALIS

Where, Experience, Exposures and Film

I live 48 miles south of the Arctic Circle in Circle, Alaska. It is a small town with a population of 107. No city water or sewer but we do have power and telephone. I've been here for 35 years and have been photographing the aurora for the last 12 years. Circle is on the banks of the Yukon River and at the end of the Steese Highway. Circle was thought to be on the Arctic Circle when established in 1893. The old timers were not too far off.

Hi there!

You have just popped in to Tom Eklund's homepage. Right now these pages are more or less in the works and will be so forever...

While waiting for some updates and stories you can take a look of some of my pictures about Finnish nature, thunderstorms and auroras. From the frame you can find separate pages for the auroras and thunderstorms, all the other pictures are in the photo gallery. At this point the photo gallery is under construction, which means that I don't have any scans from my recent images. But if the luck is with me, I could get few more images in the "near" future...

Editors Note. In my opinion this is one of the finest collections of Aurora Borealis pictures on the internet. We have includes just a few, but Tom's Website has hundreds, several of them in sequence. He lives in Finland so has very good opportunity for such photography...

March 2003 Gallery
Summary: Solar wind streams flowing from coronal holes hit Earth's magnetic field on March 3rd, 5th, 14-20th and 26-27th. In each case, the impacts triggered G1- to G2-class geomagnetic storms.

February 2003 Gallery
Summary: On Feb. 1st at 2100 UT, a coronal mass ejection swept past Earth. At first not much happened because the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) near Earth was pointing north - a condition which suppresses geomagnetic activity. Some hours later, however, the IMF tilted south and a day long G1-class geomagnetic storm began. Sky watchers in Canada and Alaska saw some splendid Northern Lights on Feb. 2nd. Two days later, on Feb. 4th, Earth passed through a solar wind stream flowing from a coronal hole, which briefly re-energized the storm. Solar wind streams also sparked auroras on Feb. 9th-10th, 16th-19th, and 26th.

The Northern Lights / Aurora Borealis
A North Dakota Perspective
By Lyndon Anderson

OVERVIEW:   Following is information that I have compiled since 2000 on the northern lights / aurora borealis. Please read through it if you would like more information on a North Dakota perspective of the northern lights / aurora borealis. Also, please note that the information is copyright.

Editors Note: Lyndon Anderson has an impressive collection of photos taken on the Prairies with many showing intense reds, violets and blues. Well worth the visit. The pictures are accompanied by photography information, date and times and other stories.
